What Are Robux? The Currency, and What It Can and Cannot Do
Robux are the currency inside Roblox, and the important word is inside. They are bought with real money, they buy items, passes and upgrades within the platform, and for almost everyone they are a one-way trip.
Understanding that one-way structure explains everything else on this site — why the prices are what they are, why creators earn differently from players, and above all why nobody can afford to give Robux away, which is the arithmetic that every scam depends on you not doing.
What Robux actually are#
A closed-loop virtual currency. Roblox issues them, sells them, sets their price, and decides what they can be exchanged for. They are not a cryptocurrency, they are not transferable between accounts except through the platform’s own mechanisms, and they have no value outside it.
- Bought with real money in fixed packs, or received monthly with a Premium subscription.
- Spent on avatar items, game passes, private servers and in-experience purchases.
- Earned by creators when other players spend in their experience or buy what they have made.
- Converted back to real money only by eligible creators, through the official Developer Exchange.
- Not transferable person-to-person as a gift, and not tradeable for cash outside the platform without breaching the terms of use.
That last point matters. Off-platform Robux trading is against the rules, it is the vector for a large share of the scams, and it typically ends with the account banned rather than paid.
The three different values of one Robux#
This is the single most useful thing to understand, and it is why our calculator prints three numbers rather than one. The same Robux is worth quite different amounts depending on which direction it is moving.

Buying costs roughly three times what cashing out returns. That spread is Roblox’s margin, it is public, and it is the reason a free Robux generator cannot exist: nobody can hand out something they had to buy at the higher price.
Where Robux come from#
- Purchase. Fixed packs on the website, in the app or as a gift card.
- Premium subscription. A monthly allowance included with the subscription tier.
- Creator earnings. Passes, items and in-experience purchases sold to other players.
- Engagement-based payouts. Roblox pays creators according to the time Premium members spend in their experience.
- Affiliate and official promotions. Occasional, run by Roblox itself, and always on a Roblox domain.

Buying on the web versus in an app#
The same pack can cost noticeably more inside a mobile app than on the website, because the app store takes a cut of in-app purchases and the price reflects it. Buying through a browser on the Roblox website is normally the cheaper route, and gift cards are a third option that also caps spending.
- Web purchases are typically the best price per Robux.
- Mobile in-app purchases carry the app store’s cut.
- Larger packs are better value per Robux than smaller ones, in every currency.
- Gift cards are useful for controlling spending, since the exposure is the card’s value.
- Premium includes an allowance and other benefits; whether it is better value depends on how much you would otherwise buy.
What Robux are not#
- Not an investment. They cannot appreciate, and the platform sets the price on both sides.
- Not money. Outside the platform they buy nothing, and for non-creators there is no way back to cash.
- Not transferable as a gift. There is no send Robux to a friend feature; anyone claiming to do this for you is running a scam.
- Not obtainable free. No generator, code site, reward app or extension produces them.

Can Robux be converted back into real money?
Only by eligible creators, through the official Developer Exchange, and only under conditions: a Premium subscription, a minimum balance, a verified account and a minimum age. The rate is far below the purchase price — roughly a third of a cent per Robux against about a cent to buy — because the buying price includes Roblox’s margin. That gap is why buying Robux to resell makes no financial sense, and why any offer to buy your Robux outside the platform is either a scam or a terms-of-service breach that ends in a ban.
Can I send Robux to a friend?
There is no direct gift or transfer feature between accounts. The legitimate ways to give someone Robux are to buy them a gift card or a Premium subscription. Everything else — a trade where you pay first, a person who offers to top up your balance, a site that transfers Robux for a fee — is a scam, and the absence of a transfer feature is exactly what makes those offers impossible to fulfil.
